Munterconnaught GFC, Cavan,

                                     CLUB FACILITIES DEVELOPMENT

Munterconnaught GFC was founded in 1927 and has been an integral part of the community since then.
The existing clubrooms and playing pitch were developed and built during the 1980's and opened in St. Bartholomew's Park in 1988 on the August Bank Holiday Monday.

As the local population has grown since the mid to late 1990's, the club looked at how the existing facilities could be transformed and modernised and in September 2007 the Sports Development Committee was formed with the remit of delivering new and enhanced facilities at an affordable price that would give everyone in the community the opportunity to participate in GAA, other sport and recreational activity.

The new facilities and improvements to the existing Club facilities are to the
benefit of all members of the community.
They are open to all paid up members and include a Running/Walking track with lighting, Covered spectator stand, Gym, Handball/Racquetball Court, new Ladies Changing Rooms, Referees Room & Treatment Room.
The roof was raised on the existing building which can facilitate a Badminton court in the future.
Apart from the Club itself, many other community based groups now use the facilities on a regular basis.

The new facilities were officially opened on Friday, 12th August 2011.
The Development Committee would like to thank the local community for contributing to a large part of the funding and also the Department of Sport and Tourism, Oldcastle Credit Union and the GAA for the professional manner in which they released funding and assisted the completion of this work.

A Handball Club has been set up - we have both Senior and Juvenile members.
Senior Tournaments (Singles and Doubles) and Juvenile Tournaments take place every year.

GYM - The Gym is strictly available for use by fully paid up members only. Those wishing to use the Gym must first complete and sign a Gym Disclaimer form and be shown how to use the equipment.

There was a new round of Sports Grants in 2012 (the first since 2008).
The Club applied for funding to complete:
1. Pitch drainage improvements
2. Convert the grounds behind the Handball Court into a playing/training pitch
3. Additional lighting around the converted pitch
4. New Ball nets in at both ends of the main pitch
5. Additional Multi Gym Equipment

The Club has secured further funding towards this work and this has allowed the Club to complete the pitch drainage improvements and convert the grounds behind the Handball court into a playing/training pitch during 2013 and into 2014.

Further funding was secured from the 2015 round of Sports Capital grants which allowed the Club complete drainage works on the main playing pitch and erect new floodlights around the training pitch.

Why was there a need for new facilities

  • Not enough space for everyday needs, i.e. Changing Rooms, Toilets, Storage and Meeting Rooms.

  • Growing community needs better variety of amenities.

  • No work undertaken to the existing Clubhouse or pitch surrounds since 1988.

  • Need for decent, modern sports facilities.

  • Pitch upgrading and illuminated Running/Walking track for safety

  • Community has grown by up to 100% since 2000.

  • Knocktemple National School enrolment has doubled from 71 to over 160 since 1997.

  • Proper infrastructure needed to give members of the community the choices they require to persue GAA and other recreational sports activities.

  • Better facilities encourage more participation.
